Teeth Whitening
Teeth are porous in nature, which means that they absorb the materials they come into contact with, just like a sponge. Anything that you eat or drink that has color will stain your teeth. Over time, the natural color of your teeth becomes darker. Consuming wine, berries and coffee and/or smoking, are some of the most staining activities. Teeth whitening works by taking having brightening substances absorbed into the teeth so as to push embedded stains out. With the guidance of your dentist, teeth whitening is a safe practice.
Teeth whitening treatments are easily maintained at home. Regular brushing and flossing will keep your pearly whites shining. There are numerous benefits to whitening your teeth. You will feel more confident in social situations as you are free to smile without worry or embarrassment. Whiter teeth also provide a more youthful appearance. Many people report feeling happier and more attractive. A brighter smile is eye-catching. There are several options for whitening your teeth. You and your dentist will work together to select the most appropriate method for you.

Over the Counter Methods
Over-the-counter methods are the least expensive form of whitening. These methods can include:
Whitening strips: Thin strips of plastic which are coated with peroxide. You attach the strips to the front surface of your teeth and wear them for about 30 minutes a day over the course of a couple of weeks. Strips are viewed as the most effective form of over-the-counter whiteners.
The results last around a few months.
Mouthwashes: Like strips, whitening rinses contain small amounts of peroxide. They are used in exactly the same way as traditional mouthwashes, but rather than remove bacteria, their purpose is to whiten your teeth. These rinses are not as effective as other forms of whitening because your teeth are only exposed to the whitening agent for 30 to 60 seconds at a time.
Store-bought whitening trays: Store bought whitening trays are an affordable option for brightening your teeth. The trays are filled with a peroxide gel and placed against your teeth. Many people prefer this method because it is a similar practice to the teeth whitening procedure done at the dentist’s office, but are not as effective as professional treatments.
Whitening at Home
Your dentist may describe tooth whitening products for use at home. You will receive customized teeth trays, which are perfectly molded to the shape of your teeth and provide added comfort. This method is just as affordable as it is effective, which makes it a great investment. The gel prescribed by your dentist will have a higher concentration of peroxide than products purchased over the counter; however, it will still be less concentrated than materials used in the dental office. There is less risk for irritated gums as the gel will stay firmly in place with your secure mouth trays. Follow your dentist’s instructions for use. You may wear your trays for 30 minutes to several hours per day. You may also have the option to wear your whitening trays overnight while you sleep.
Whitening At the Dentist’s Office
Whitening procedures at the dental office provide the most substantial results. Your dentist will utilize whitening gel that has a much higher concentration of peroxide than over the counter or take home prescription methods. Once the gel is activated, it will be absorbed into your teeth and will push the stains and discoloration out. In just one office visit, you will have a dramatically whiter smile. Your dentist may shine a specialized light onto your teeth to activate the peroxide. This allows the gel to be more easily absorbed into your teeth. In order to achieve more sustainable results, your dentist may formulate a treatment that includes both in-office and at-home treatments.
