Crowns

A crown, also referred to as a dental cap, is a method of tooth restoration which completely covers a failing tooth. Chips, cracks and tooth decay are just a few examples of why a crown may be needed. In addition to providing protection for the underlying tooth, crowns also improves the tooth’s appearance by correcting its shape and alignment. Crowns are sometimes placed on top of dental implants. This is done when a tooth is completely missing. Rather than covering the tooth, the crown instead covers a metal implant that has been inserted where the tooth previously lay. Porcelain, or ceramic crowns, are a popular option as they mimic the color of natural teeth. Other materials include gold, silver or acrylic.

Metal-free Crowns

Metal-free materials can be used to create a tooth replacement which looks nearly identical to a natural tooth. They provide patients with added confidence and security, as no one would know they had a crown unless they happened to mention it. Metal-free options include Zirconia and porcelain, or ceramic, crowns. Porcelain crowns are made entirely of thin porcelain. They require sophisticated technology to produce and are prized for their natural, tooth-like appearance. Zirconia crowns are made from pieces of crystal and are incredibly durable. They are stronger – as much as five times stronger than porcelain crowns – and are virtually indestructible. They also simulate the translucent appearance of natural teeth.

Dentures and Partials

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and their surrounding tissues. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when one or more natural teeth remain. Complete dentures are placed after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has started to heal. Wax rims are used as the base onto which denture teeth are permanently secured. The wax is pink in color to simulate the gum line. This is done for both the upper and lower jaws. A partial denture consists of denture teeth which are attached to the same gum-colored base. The base is sometimes connected by a metal structure that holds the denture in place in the mouth. Partial dentures fill in the spaces created by missing teeth while prevent your natural teeth from shifting.

Fixed Bridges

As their name suggests, dental bridges are structures composed of two or more dental crowns and a false teeth called a pontics, which sit in the place of missing teeth. Bridges can only be removed by a dentist and are held in place over crowns that are fitted over the remaining healthy teeth. Crowns are made for two or more of the teeth located on either side of the gap. These are the anchoring teeth between which the pontics will be placed. Pontics can be made from metals, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of these materials. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers help to revitalize your smile, by providing a brighter layer over your existing teeth. Veneers also help to give your smile a straighter and more uniform appearance. Porcelain veneers are individually customized for each patient, ensuring that the outcome will be virtually impossible to distinguish from natural teeth. Dental porcelain is strong, aesthetically-pleasing and mimics the natural feel and function of teeth.
