Dental Implants

You can help to stop or prevent jaw bone loss through the use of dental implants. Implants are artificial tooth roots which are inserted into bone to provide support or restoration for missing teeth. There are several causes of tooth loss, such as tooth decay, trauma to the mouth and root canal failure. Missing teeth can result in biting abnormalities, which can negatively impact eating and can lead to additional issues. Dental implants greatly resemble natural teeth; it’s difficult to even tell them apart. An implant is usually composed of a medical-grade titanium screw and a dental crown which sits on top of it. The crown acts as a replacement for your missing tooth and is customized to fit in with the surrounding teeth. The benefits of dental implants are that they provide patients with the durability to eat all of their favorite foods. They also help to stimulate the jaw bone, which supports facial features and prevents further bone loss.

Types of Implants:

Two-Stage Implants

Endosteal Implants

Single-Stage Implants

Subperiosteal Implants

Types of cleaning and prevention procedures include

Two-Stage Implants

Endosteal Implants

Single-Stage Implants

Subperiosteal Implants

Two-Stage Implants

First includes surgery to place the implant into the jaw bone. The gum tissue is then closed with stitches. The second stage involves a minor surgery, which attaches a substructure to provide increased support.

Endosteal Implants

Endosteal implants are the most common type of two-stage implant. They are placed into the jawbone primarily as an alternative to dentures or a bridge. These implants can be threaded, smooth or bladed.

Single-Stage Implants

This procedure involves placing a long implant into the jaw so that it is on the same level as the gum tissue. The metal implant post is left exposed, to hold the dental crown which will sit atop it. Subperiosteal implants are the most common single-stage implant and are primarily used to hold dentures in place.

The benefits of dental implants:

  • Improves physical appearance
  • Increased comfort
  • Eliminates common health issues with failing teeth

Improves Physical Appearance

A major benefit to dental implants is that they prevent bone loss and further deterioration of the facial structure. When natural teeth are severely compromised or missing, the lips become pursed, wrinkles are more pronounced and the cheeks sag. This makes a person appear to be much older than they actually are. Implants help to give your face a more balanced, youthful appearance.

Increased Comfort

You can do all of your regular activities of daily living with implants. You can brush, floss, eat, drink and sleep with your dental implants because they are completely permanent. You never have to take them out of your mouth. The quality of your life will improve significantly because you’ll be able to eat all of your favorite foods again, without restriction, and without the messy inconvenience of dentures. Since dental implants imitate natural teeth, caring for them is as simple as performing your normal oral hygiene routine and maintaining regular dental checkups.

Eliminates Common Health Issues

Dental implants help to create a healthier mouth. Once the failing tooth and root are replaced, the implant feels and functions like a real tooth. Implants also reduce the occurrence of Periodontal disease, a chronic bacterial infection that leads to gum inflammation. If left untreated it can lead to serious medical complications. With routine maintenance, a healthy smile will last a lifetime.
